In the Epic, The Odyssey by Homer Odysseus takes a journey coming home from the Trojan War. The provinces in which the story takes place is very important and contributes on how the geography, characters and plot are all connected. The story begins in Troy, Greece where the Trojan War took place. The next province Odysseus traveled to was The Cicones, "The city was not at all protected and all of the inhabitants fled without a fight into nearby mountains." (The Odyssey on Map tales) Perhaps one of the most important provinces that "Odysseus stopped at Aiolia, home of Aeolus, the god of the winds. Aeolus gave them hospitality for a month and provided for a west wind to carry them home." (The Odyssey on Map Tales". The following Provinces were homes of gods helping Odysseus return home; Sirens, Thrinacia, then Ogygia where Calypso lived."On behalf of Athena, Zeus intervened and sent Hermes to tell Kalypso to let Odysseus go." ( The Odyssey on Map tales) Finally Odysseus returns home to the city of Ithaca. The provinces play a key role in this story and the characters especially the gods tell us information about the each province.
